Generally speaking there is an ever growing Junior volleyball offering in the 5 counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northants and Nottinghamshire. It’s not just established clubs providing junior sessions but also more schools are getting involved too.

So, to help encourage this growth the EMVA set up a junior volleyball program in the form of development squads.  The regional boys and girls squads usually train once a month on separate days.  We also operate an inter-county Grand Prix style competition to improve match skills.

Consequently, our most important goal is to help schools and junior clubs by creating a pathway.  Secondly, this provides them with  learning the basics,  team bonding, develop match skills, advanced technical and tactical elements.  Finally, the pathway can take someone from recreational volleyball, county, regional and through to inter-regional competitions. That is if they are interested.

Furthermore, if they excel it could provide them the opportunity of training with the England cadet and Junior squads.  Significantly the East midlands have had a number of junior players go through the program recently and represent England at an international level.

We also look to support the individual coaches and welcome them to join in at the regional training sessions.  In the long run the more coaches involved the better the transfer of information.

East Midlands Player Selected to Represent England at 2x International Competitions:

Congratulations are in order for an East Midlands Junior Player, Thomas Graham-Jones, who has been selected to represent England at The Cornacchia World Cup in Italy in April, and in the NEVZA Competition in October in Finland. Thomas currently plays for Nottingham Rockets NVL team and is hoping to join Sheffield Hallam's Superleague team as a Libero after his A-Levels have finished.

Congratulations Thomas and good luck with your future endeavors.

First Junior Boys Training Session:

  • 15 players from around the region came together to train and play matches. Players representing local clubs Ashfield Vipers, Nottingham Rockets, Darkstar, Hermitage and Belper were all in the mix. The next U17 boys Grand Prix is on 8th February, get yourself along to Loughborough College and come join in the fun!

First Junior Girls Training Session:

  • We welcomed the first taste of junior girls volleyball to Loughborough College on Saturday 12th October. There were 3 teams in total which included: Ashfield Vipers, Derby Darkstar, and Nottingham Rockets. After a bit of training, a Grand Prix was held where Vipers came in 1st place, Rockets in 2nd, and Darkstar in 3rd! Well done all, and we look forward to hosting this again, alongside other junior girls again on the 4th January for another training and competition day!
  • We would also like to welcome new Coach, Caoimhe Tapp, who will coach alongside Ian Clews for the U15 Girls group.
